Who is eligible to take a New York State PIRP or IPIRP course?
New and experienced NY drivers, even those just receiving their driver’s license.
Drivers listed as the principal operator on their automobile and/or motorcycle insurance policies.
Violators that have incurred points on their driving record.
A PIRP or IPIRP course can be completed every 18 months for point reduction benefits and only applies to points assessed for violations that occurred within the 18 months immediately before the course completion.
How do I receive the point reduction?
Your successful completion status will be electronically transmitted to NYS Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 business days.
If you are eligible, the DMV will automatically apply the point reduction to your driving record, up to four points.
When will I get my certificate of completion?
Upon completion of the course, the National Safety Council will mail your Certificate of Completion the next business day. Please allow 3-7 days for US mail delivery. For additional certificate questions, please call 800-962-3434
How do I receive the insurance discount?
You are responsible for submitting the Certificate of Completion to your insurance company, who will apply the discount to your policy.
Do I have to take the course all at once?
No, you can take the course in multiple visits to the site. The course bookmarks your progress when you exit. Upon returning to the course, you will be prompted to return to your bookmark.

How long does the course take to complete?
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles requires the course to provide a minimum of 320 minutes of instruction. However, you can take the course in multiple visits to the site. The course bookmarks your progress when you exit, so you can return where you left off.
